Hall of Famer Wade Boggs reveals he has prostate cancer

Wade Boggs, 66, played 18 MLB seasons with the Boston Red Sox (1982–92), New York Yankees (1993–97), and the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays (1998–99). He was a five-time batting champion and a 12-time All-Star. In 2005, Boggs announced that he had prostate cancer on social media. The former third baseman sounded upbeat in his announcement, saying he will be prepared to participate in the ritual of ringing a bell after cancer patients have finished their treatment.

“We’re with you every step of the way, Wade!” the Hall of Fame wrote on social media in their well-wishes.

After completing with 3,010 hits, 1,513 runs, 118 home runs, and 1,014 RBIs over his career, Boggs hit.328 and became a member of the 3,000-hit club.

After receiving treatment for metastatic prostate cancer, Boggs’ colleague and fellow 2005 inductee Ryne Sandberg announced in mid-August that he was cancer-free.

“Rang the Bell this morning!” written Sandberg. “WE succeeded, WE triumphed! What a dream team—families, medical professionals, friends, nurses, and supporters—who helped [wife] Margaret and me over the past eight months! The love, prayers, good thoughts, and supportive remarks we have received make us feel really fortunate.”
