At the World Deaf Athletics Championships in Taipei, Taiwan, deaf athlete Tanel Visnap added silver to his bronze in the long jump by winning the 200-meter final.
On the championship’s last day, Visnap recorded a timing of 21.61 in a race that had to be pushed ahead because of a typhoon warning.
He stated following the race: “On my previous competition days, the finals were always held in the evening, which allowed me to maintain my Estonian body clock.”
“However, today’s activities were rescheduled for the morning due to an impending typhoon threat. That meant that at 3:35 a.m. Estonian time, I competed in the 200-meter final.
He continued, “achieving my second-best time ever, in a 1.3 meter per second, headwind, is especially surprising,” in light of this.
“I still feel a little let down that I wasn’t able to maintain a light and easy run for the final 30 to 40 meters, since this gave the American [winner] the opportunity to past me. His best for the season is 20.70. Although competing six days in a row had taken a toll, Visnap stated, “I’m glad that, following the 100-meter disaster, I was still able to salvage the competition and bring home two medals.”
The 200-meter winner, Eric Demarco Gregory, finished in 21.53 seconds.
Valga’s Visnap now has two medals to take home after taking home a bronze in the long jump.
Simon Teiss, one of the other competing Estonian athletes, improved his preliminary heat time to finish in the 200-meter semifinals with a time of 23.27, enough for tenth place overall.
Rinat Raisp ran a strong race in the 400-meter hurdles final, coming in barely two seconds short of his personal best and taking eighth place overall.
Marja-Liisa Müllermann cleared 1.50 meters in the women’s high jump final, good for ninth place overall.
