The Yankees have recently released outfielder Luis González from his minor league contract, according to a Triple-A team announcement (on X). He returns to free agency and will most likely seek another minor league opportunity elsewhere.
González joined with New York in December. The 28-year-old struggled through 10 games in Spring Training before starting the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. González played in 22 games for the RailRiders, totaling 91 plate appearances. His slash line of.282/.374/.397 was impressive, yet he did not hit any long runs. Hitting.400 on balls in play helped compensate for a 26.4% strikeout rate.
Even a more impressive Triple-A campaign is unlikely to have earned González a look in the Bronx. Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Alex Verdugo have secured starting outfield positions. Trent Grisham hasn’t done much off the bench, but he’s a solid defensive center fielder. González, on the other hand, has less experience in the center and is more suited to a corner position. Jasson Domínguez will begin a minor league rehab assignment tomorrow, maybe returning to New York within a few weeks.
González appeared in parts of three MLB seasons. Between 2020 and 2021, he played sporadically for the White Sox and Giants. In 2022, the left-handed hitter contributed significantly to San Francisco, batting.254/.323/.360 in 350 plate appearances. He hasn’t played in the majors since then, owing to a back issue that necessitated surgery during Spring Training last year. González was sidelined for the first four months of the season. San Francisco placed him on outright waivers shortly after his comeback and discharged him totally in September.
