That’s the opinion of analyst Jermaine Jenas of Match of the Day, who feels Luton Town and Burnley are still in the running.
That’s even though Newcastle United’s 4-1 victory over Vincent Kompany’s team on Saturday dealt a severe blow to the team.
With two games remaining, the margin to safety increased to five points after Nottingham Forest, the team they are chasing in 17th place, defeated Sheffield United.
Next week, the Clarets will visit Tottenham before playing Forest, and Nuno Espirito Santo’s team will play Chelsea.
Luton’s last two games of the season are against Fulham and West Ham.
Even though Forest made significant progress over the weekend to maintain their top division standing, Jenas thinks Burnley and Luton shouldn’t be written off just yet.
“Those teams are where they are because none of them have been consistent this year,” he said to host Gary Lineker. However, they will not give up.
“The season’s final match between Forest and Burnley is looking absolutely massive.”
“Not as huge if Burnley had had a result on Saturday,” Lineker chimed in.
“That’s right,” Jenas answered. “But, there’s a chance it will still be a big game.”
Ian Wright, a fellow analyst and former Claret, also offered commentary on Burnley’s challenging season, speculating that their dismal home record—they have only won twice—may be a huge hindrance.
He remarked, “You have to get that right.”
“If you want to stay up, you have to get something from your home games.”
