Because Nikola Jokic is such an excellent basketball player, the MVP award has become contentious once more. Jokic seems like the winner every year, but this time around, he wants to be the front-runner once more.
Ryan Blackburn questioned Nuggets head coach Michael Malone about Jokic’s MVP victory, and Malone responded with fervor.
“I don’t know if I can put that into words at what his greatness means to every team,” stated Malone. To your point, of course, I believe he has a strong chance of taking home his third MVP, but more importantly, that’s not what drives him. He doesn’t get out of bed in the morning to pursue personal glory and attention. His motivation is to help the group succeed and potentially win another championship. That’s his main focus.”
Malone thinks Jokic has set the Nuggets on an even higher trajectory for this season than they were for their championship season the previous one. Compared to their 53 victories the previous season, the Nuggets have already won 54 games this season.
“With four games remaining, we would not have 54 victories—more than we had the previous year—if it weren’t for his excellence, effectiveness, and influence each and every night. That is what I find so amazing about Nikola as a player, above all else. The man’s unwavering greatness and his ability to consistently provide that caliber of performance every night, regardless of who is present, are what truly amaze me. Put that squad on his back, essentially, and improve each and every one of his teammates.”
Whether the Denver Nuggets improve on their campaign from the previous one is still to be determined, but they are unquestionably back on the right track.
