Hull City’s Liam Rosenior gives his assessment on Watford’s “miracle goal”

Despite a genuinely positive performance, Hull City’s head coach Liam Rosenior was left puzzled by his team’s 2-1 home loss to Watford, who was on the rise, at the MKM Stadium. After falling behind early, City hit back inside two minutes when Scott Twine’s powerful goal equalized the score after Liam Delap’s dangerous run was cut short.

After an hour, Ben Hamer saved Jaden Philogene’s spot-kick after Jacob Greaves was fouled inside the box. Wesley Hoedt of Watford lobbed Ryan Allsop from more than forty yards out as City pushed for a winner following Philogene’s loss to secure a 2-1 victory.

Despite the evident sadness of their three-game winning streak at the MKM Stadium, City found Hamer in outstanding form, creating 23 opportunities at goal. Still, the head coach of the Tigers was full of praise for his team. “It’s weird because I always said when I came in, I would always tell the truth as much as possible,” Rosenior stated to Hull Live. “I don’t recall ever feeling this way following a game throughout my playing or managerial career.

“I’m thrilled with a lot of things, but we lose a game that, had we drawn, would have left me feeling let down by our effort. I felt that we played some really good parts, especially our second-half dominance. We appeared to be the team that would score and continue (and win it) even after the penalty miss.”

After Hoedt dispatched of Delap, he lofted a shot from just inside his own half that took Ryan Allsop off guard as it dipped into the back of his net. However, Rosenior was eager to assign blame.

The way I urged the players to play, they scored an incredible miracle goal despite our flaws and inevitable blunders as a young team. However, I will not be getting down. It’s not a crisis; it’s an amazing performance, and on a different day, I believe we defeat them by two, three, or more goals, giving them credit.

“They had a strong, athletic club that played the entire game and capitalized on its opportunities. Regretfully, that day we didn’t either. However, I believe we can win the game if we replay it 99 times out of 100 with that level of performance. It truly is a miracle strike.

“I often talk about being trustworthy with our own half. I felt Liam Delap was the best; his performance was very amazing, well above average, in my opinion.

“Every game, in my opinion, he becomes better. When he attempted to turn the lad, he nicks it and hits an incredible marvel strike, but it dips at the last second. This was perhaps the only instance in the game where he was unreliable in the field. I won’t assign responsibility, though, because I requested that the players play in a certain manner. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be discussing that particular instance.”
