Pro Bowl receiver and former Los Angeles Raider Hunter Renfrow could be signed by the Dallas Cowboys for a low cost, which would make a lot of noise in an otherwise quiet free agency.
Renfrow may be moving to Dallas after being cut by the Raiders prior to the start of the new season. A source claims that after his release, he was connected to the Cowboys in an alleged low-cost trade. After a poor season last year, it appears like Renfrow is out of choices, but the Cowboys might still be interested.
Given that he inked a two-year, $32 million contract extension with the Raiders in 2022, it might be difficult to imagine his release. Renfrow caught 103 catches in 2021, accumulating 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. That year, he was a leader in the locker room and was selected for his first Pro Bowl. Prior to his output slowing down, it appeared that he had a promising future.
Following the signing of his new contract, Renfrow missed seven games in 2022 due to injuries. He was unable to revert to his previous state of mind, even after rejoining the squad. His 330 yards and two scores from just 36 receptions were his final-year totals. With the acquisitions of Tre Tucker, DeAndre Carter, and Jakobi Myers last offseason, the Raiders were stockpiling receivers.
Even though Renfrow was fit for all 17 games in 2023, his role with the club gradually declined. He only played 35 percent of the offensive snaps, which is a career low, and caught 25 catches for 255 yards. Renfrow was released to save the Raiders money because there was no reason for him to go back to Las Vegas.
The Dallas Cowboys’ starting lineup includes CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks, but there are some concerns regarding their WR3. Michael Gallup is allegedly on the trade block, thus the Cowboys will move on from him. Gallup is unlikely to find a trade partner, which means he’ll likely be released before his guaranteed income begins to accrue. They would then have to choose from unproven candidates like Jalen Brooks, KaVontae Turpin, and Jalen Tolbert.
Renfrow is a cheap alternative as well; he can still support Lamb on the opposite end of the slot as a dependable receiver. While Lamb and Renfrow concentrate on the deep threat, Cooks might take on an outside role or take a slant approach. The former 2019 fifth-round pick’s unsatisfactory discharge from the league may have left his suitors in disarray. But after Carr left, he was unable to reach an understanding with Jimmy Garoppolo.
Renfrow was experiencing all-time lows in his career, but an ineffective offense was preventing him from receiving the necessary playing time. He may produce more if he played for Dak Prescott, especially considering the year that Prescott had. Renfrow might be signed if the team thinks he can hit accurate routes and has good hands.
